Wood or Synthetic? April 15th by Dayne Jones

When you build a deck or dock, you will be faced with tons of decisions. Where does the deck need to go? What elevation should the deck be? How big should the dock be? The list of decisions goes on and on. One of the most important decisions about your deck or dock will be the decking material used.

The main choices of decking and their explanations are as follows:

Low Cost 5/4 Decking
5/4 Decking is the thinnest decking you can buy. It is great for a low cost backyard deck or a pool deck built on a budget. Durability is not great here, especially with a deck in the Tampa Bay area. Prolonged sun exposure will cause the deck to last even shorter. If you are looking for the quickest, cheapest solution and are not concerned with longevity, then this might be the perfect material for your backyard deck or even a pool deck. This is not recommended for docks or boathouses of any kind.

Medium Grade 2x6 or 2x8 Decking
2x6 or 2x8 decking is always a good choice. This is the standard choice for most decks and docks. Decks or docks built with this decking will look decent and last a long time. If you are looking for a very affordable deck or dock and still want a great look and durability, this is your decking.

#1 Grade 2x6 Decking
#1 decking is more expensive than the first mentioned decking choices in almost every case. #1 decking is the same wood as standard 2x6 decking but there is a routed edge for aesthetic appeal. Decks or docks built with #1 decking will always look great and last a very long time. The rounded edges will take out some of the imperfections of the wood and will leave your deck or dock looking great for years to come at only a slightly higher rate than standard decking.

Synthetic Composite Decking
Composite decking is, simply put, the BMW of decking. If you are looking for the best in looks, appeal, and durability, this is your choice. Composites are usually made of plastic so you will never have any imperfections like you would with standard wood decking. If you see a deck or dock built with composite decking, you will know immediately because it is simply not wood and it is usually a grey, red, or brownish color. This decking is highly durable, a little pricey, but extremely worth it in the end.

So now that you are informed, make your decisions wisely. There are tradeoffs with each choice so make sure you are considering longevity, looks, and price.
